J Rêve International’s programs aim to explore the intersection of art and culture in order to elevate the consciousness of humanity, advance human intelligence and strengthen social dialogue and international relations.  Our participants are primarily educators, artists and young professionals interested in interactive global experiences that expand their cultural proficiency.

*Save an additional $50 for referring another confirmed registrant ($100 max referrals).  International airfare and travel insurance are not included, however, we can assist you in securing both.

* Special STEAM/Arts Integration curriculum for educators interested in receiving PD hours certificate.  Global Arts Education fellowship is available to one educator or doctoral student (covers the majority of the program fee). Example Itinerary  for Colombia Program

Day 1

TRANSFER IN

Today a private transport will pick you up at the Cartagena airport with the assistance of an English speaking guide who will give you a warm welcome!

Night at the chosen hotel. Included: Private transfer in with English speaking guide and a room with breakfast.

Day 2

 

 

La Boquilla is an afro-descendant fishermen village that for more than 200 years until today they still continue in a heroic struggle of cultural resistance to preserve their ancestral traditions, where drums play a leading role.

Our Drum Workshop of about an hour duration is a unique opportunity to connect yourself with the typical rhythms of Afro Colombian folk music such as Cumbia, Mapalé and Champeta, through immersion by playing traditional drums.

The team of Batambora Drum Workshop School invites you to live an extraordinary experience; first a little theory, then the presentation and interaction: execution of Drums.
Batambora is a project led by a group of pushing young people from the Afro-descendant community of La Boquilla, who are committed to human and economic development that is aimed at rescuing and preserving the cultural traditions of the African heritage.

NIGHT TOUR: SALSA CLASS

Cartagena has a history of Cuban musical and cultural influence.
Enjoy the night learning the most popular Salsa steps with the professionals while taste a drink, perfect for a warm night!

Day 3

 

 

DAY TOUR PALENQUE DE SAN BASILIO – THE AFRICAN CORNER IN COLOMBIA

This tour will take you to meet “the African corner” in Colombia. This town, reflection of the crude reality of most African descendants, is a bastion of culture and history. It’s the only survivor from the 12 Palenques formed at the side of Maria’s hills at the beginning of XVIII century. Slaves that managed to escape once brought to America, followed Benkos Biohó legend, Palenque’s founder. The music and a tremendous strategy of defense enabled Palenque de San Basilio to officially become the first free town of the Spanish colonies in 1613. The tradition, the historical proud and the Palenquero, native particular language of this place, remain nowadays. After a two hours trip by car, we visit the central part of the town. A specialized guide from the community will teach us some basic words in his language, Palenquero. With the help of a translator, we will learn the exciting and brave history of this town. We will also learn how to play some of its instruments recognizing warning sounds they used to defend its freedom. After a short walk through the town, we will appreciate the student’s talent of the Batata Music School, who will perform for us 3 songs and dances. Its rhythm, between them, Mapalé and Bullerengue. These have an important influence on the Colombian Caribbean musical identity. A typical lunch with the locals will be waiting for you at noon. After saying good-bye to our local guide and to the musicians, we drive back to Cartagena.

Day 4

 

 

DAY TOUR ROSARIO ISLANDS – BEACH RESORT GENTE DE MAR, ISLA GRANDE

Rosario Islands in Cartagena form a Natural Underwater Park ideal for the contemplation of colorful coral reef in shallow water. It is located 45 kilometers far from Cartagena’s Bay, the park protects underwater ecosystems, coral reef mainly, vulnerable ecosystems, where a multiple of invertebrate species and a numerous variety of colorful fishes that dazzle of beauty. Large seaweed meadow and sea-grass are also found in the park. Beautiful beaches to enjoy sun baths are a remarkable characteristic of the park. A specialized guide will pick you up from the hotel, transportation to La Bodeguita dock. Here we get aboard a motorboat that will take you to the Isla del Sol. The boat transportation to the Island lasts about an hour. Once you get to the Island you will have time to take a sea bath. As optional activities in the Island, you can find snorkeling, kayaking or a visit to San Martin de Pajarales Aquarium. Your stay in the island includes the lunch. The return to Cartagena starts at about 3 pm.

*Pick up at 8:00 am at the hotel. The boat departs at 9 am to Rosario Islands and takes 1 hour arriving at Beach resort Gente de Mar.

NIGHT-TOUR BY CHIVA

You will take a chiva – a typical Colombian bus to go for a party-ride through the beautiful city. Accompanied with typical music, typical alcoholic drinks you will enjoy a great party night. The Chiva tour ends at a club or can also leave you in the historical centre. (Duration: approx. 2,5 hours)

 

Included: English speaking assistance for transfers in private transport, shared boat, typical lunch, tour at chiva, drinks, and room with breakfast. Night at the chosen hotel.

Day 5

 

 

FISHING & COOKING WITH THE NATIVES IN “LA BOQUILLA

This tour is perfect for people who would like to get into direct contact with the native population of this Afro- Cartagena village of fisherman and learn from the locals how to make a fishing net, how to catch crabs and how to throw the nets and catch fish in the Juan Polo’s Lagoon. Later on, visitors will head to the kitchen of a local fisherman family and here they will learn how to cook the caught fish and crabs and they will prepare some typical dishes like coconut rice. When lunch is ready, the guest will share it with the local family. After this “cooking workshop”, guests can head to the beach and relax in a hammock, enjoying the weather and nice views.

Day 6

SCHOOL VISIT FOUNDATION “PESCADOR DE LETRAS”

The foundation “FUNDACIÓN PESCADOR DE LETRAS”, is a non-profit organization, founded in the year 2017. Its purpose is to provide quality education to the children of LA BOQUILLA, which is a fishermen village outside of the City of Cartagena.

The two main objectives are education and alimentation of the children.
Additional to regular education the foundation tries to develop different skills of the children, which allow them, to improve their quality of life, their physical and intellectual development, and the conditions in which they relate to their environment, as well as the way to face life after school.

As they have observed certain difficulties in the learning process because the children felt hungry, a feeding plan was developed, which covers most of their daily alimentation needs.

The children are between 3 and 12 years and study between the preschool and elementary courses. At the moment there are 126 children assisting 7 courses which will be organized in 5 classrooms.
The work team consists of 11 people.

Day 7

 

 

TOUR WITH AN ART EXPERT

With an art expert, we will visit the modern Museum of Arts of Cartagena, as well as different art galleries, where you will have the possibility to acquire art pieces. Moreover, we will visit the workshop of a local Artist, where you can appreciate technique, creativity, style, and artwork.

Farewell dinner at El Candé Restaurant!

Included: English speaking guide, private transport, dinner and room with breakfast. Night at the chosen hotel

Day 8

 

 

This is your last day in Colombia! Take with you all of the incredible experiences and wonderful memories from this journey and make sure to come back soon!
