J Rêve International is pleased to announce the completion of it’s inaugural Global Educator Program Fellowship Program in Senegal, in partnership with Give1Project and SABS. The program started on Saturday, April 4th and ended on April 11, 2015. US educator participants were Lynn O’Brien and Angela Wedgwood from Rochester, NY, and Loganic from Macon, Georgia. Senegalese educators from the Senegalese American Bilingual School (SABS) also participated, along with students from SABS and the English Club from the Blaise Diagne High School. The panel and educator workshops were hosted at Give1Project Senegal.
The April 2015 program itinerary went as follows:
Day 1 of the J Rêve International Global Educator Program Senegal: NY Teachers visit the The African Renaissance Monument. The educators are enjoying variety of excursions exploring Senegalese culture, history, and creative communities.
Day 2 of the J Rêve International Global Educator Program Senegal truly touched our hearts. Visiting Gorée Island and seeing the ‘Door of No Return” really is an emotional experience. It’s challenging to imagine that such a beautiful place has such a tragic history in the triangular slave trade.
Day 3 of the Global Educator Program in Senegal was inspirational. The teacher roundtable and workshops were engaging and informative explorations of pedagogy. Teachers broke off into groups to discuss culture, education issues and share best practices.
Day 4 Global Educator Program Senegal: US Teachers visited the Dakar Village Des Arts – Artist Village. Teachers had a great time visiting studios and discussing the works with artists.
Day 5 Global Educator Program Senegal: US teachers and members of Give1Project Senegal engaged English Club Students from Blaise Diagne High School. The students and teachers enjoyed discussing life, school, travel, and exploring each other’s cultures. A wonderful time was had by all and the teachers look forward to continuing the dialogue and including their students back in the States.
We had such a wonderful time spending the day with these motivated students of Blaise Diagne High School and didn’t want to leave. We were especially moved when they gave us a heartfelt thank you at the end: for taking the time to visit and spend time with them, and for giving them an opportunity to express themselves in English.
Day 6 Global Educator Program Senegal. US & Senegalese teachers engaged students at the Senegalese American Bilingual School (SABS), conducting art, theater, math and global studies lessons around the theme of recycling. It was a stimulating program that concluded with a student thoughtful performance and discussion that reinforced the lessons and the importance of recycling.
Day 6 in the afternoon, we enjoyed a visit to watch Kaddu Yaraax Theater Group perform. The audience was really engaged and we really enjoyed that they discussed and debated each performance afterwards. The theater group produces socially conscious works, and one of the performances dealt with how the community can improve waste management.
The first J Rêve International Global Educator Senegal Program concluded with a thought provoking panel discussion on Multiple Intelligences & STEAM Education. Guests were very intrigued by the concepts and it made for interesting conversation. We look forward to continuing the dialogue globally on Multiple Intelligence and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education.
