D.C. STEAM+ Professional Development Conference

Achieves Goals with Successful Conclusion

The conference hosted by J Rêve International concluded on July 30th, 2017 in Washington DC. The program aimed to bolster arts education as a critical part of the learning process.

WASHINGTON, DC August 09, 2017 – –  The J Rêve International STEAM+ program concluded its Professional Development Program for multidisciplinary educators, artists and cultural programmers on July 30th, 2017, at Pepco Edison Place Gallery, 702 8th Street Northwest, LL2, in Washington, DC.

The program has since received rave reviews from its many participants from around the country and Australia and also drew praise from Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser who welcomed the participants of the STEAM+ Conference to the city with a letter wishing them a successful and productive event. She stated, “This event increases awareness of STEAM education to better prepare educators, students and governments for growing intellectual demands, diversified student performance and achievement, competitive problem solving, and creative thinking.”

One of the many highlights of the program included the Collection Highlights tour on Friday presented by the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA). The NMWA is the only major museum in the world that is solely dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements in the visual, performing and literary arts. The tour featured works from the sixteenth century to contemporary works and participants received a packet of information about the resources NMWA provides to support arts education. “This program went way beyond my expectation. Not only was the networking amazing, but I learned so much about how Integration is the future for education,” said a participant from Rochester, NY.

The schedule featured a multitude of world-class presenters, anthology contributors and actual practitioners including: Mathematician Dr. Christine Mann Darden of Hidden Figures, Arts Education Policy Expert Jeff Poulin of Americans for the Arts, Arts Education Grants specialist Lakita Edwards of the National Endowment for the Arts, Engineer and Education Specialist Joeletta Patrick of NASA, Engineer Alicia Morgan, STEAM Educator Lisa Yokana, Teaching Artist Richena Brockinson, Educator Jay Veal, Educators Craig and Cory Stevenson, Artist Ytasha Womack, Artist and Engineer Patrick Hunter, Gallerist Margery Goldberg, and Jacqueline Cofield, founder of J Rȇve International.

Three awards were presented at the conference:

  • Inspiring Leader in STEAM Award 2017 was presented to NASA Mathematician Dr. Christine Mann Darden
  • Exemplary Educator in STEAM Award 2017 was presented to Virginia based educator Susan Bardenhagen
  • Emerging Leader in STEAM Award 2017 was presented to Dallas based engineer Alicia Morgan

“This conference was a unique experience. It’s rare to have true STEM Leaders and Artists in the same room for strategic discussions about STEAM+ Arts Integration,” said presenter Alicia Morgan.   The STEAM+ Arts Integration anthology featuring 12 contributing educators and STEAM specialists was premiered during the conference and will be available on Amazon August 25th, 2017 with an international book tour scheduled to begin Fall 2017.
